When norton AntiVirus scans for viruses how can i prevent it from hijacking my PC and slowing it dow

You can't. Norton softwares are notorious for slowing down computers. Some people have already submitted some excellent advice. Especially, running a scan at night, when you won't be on the computer. There are other tricks that I use. Before a scan, I exit from all non-essential programs. This should speed up the scan because more memory and CPU cycles will be available.

If you get a chance, you might want to take a look at this article:

There are 3 free antivirus programs that are very light on system resources, including Antivir, Avast and AVG Antivirus.

run it when your about to go somewhere and if you can't do that buy a faster pc with more ram and processor
They all will slow your computer down while scanning even running in the background unless you have a lot of memory, so the suggestion to run it when you are not using it and allow time for the scan to run is the best in my opinion. Peace!
The best way is to schedule the virus check for a time when you dont need it as much.
Get an Apple.
Schedule it to run at a specific time, such as midnight.
