Is it true that some viruses are resistant to heat and cold?

If so, what food safety precautions should consumers take?

I know that viruses and bacteria will become dormant at lower temperatures, which is why we refrigerate food to help slow down their reproductive processes. Make sure that you use clean utensils and hands to prevent cross contamination from foods that may contain bacteria and viruses, wash your hands often and follow the directions for cooking meats. Avoid eating raw meats and foods that contain eggs. Use separate cutting boards for preparing meats and other foods that may not be cooked or will be cooked to a temperature that is lower than is needed to ensure safe consumption. Also any food that is kept too long has the potential to have spoiled and make you sick. If there is an odor that is questionable or you don't know how long something has been around dispose of it and start fresh.
