Any time you even connect to the Internet, there is risk.
To remove any and all risk, put your computer in a vault or class III security container and don't connect it to anything.
To minimize the risks, install a virus scanner, run the updates at least weekly for your virus scanner and Microsoft products.
Install a malware utility such as Windows Defender. Make sure you enable the Windows firewall.
I use Avast anti-virus. Why? Free for home non-commercial use. Frequently updated and it updates the virus signatures for you daily.
I use Windows Defender for malware protection. Free. It does a reasonable job.
I use the Windows Firewall built in to Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.
